The historic, riverside town of Tewkesbury is the setting for this self-guided walking short break. Tucked away in the Gloucestershire countryside, Tewkesbury is full of long narrow alleys and streets that take you on a journey back into the Medieval times.

Together, the old mills and impressive stonework of the Tewkesbury Abbey offer a gateway to discover the local history.

There is also a selection of gorgeous riverside walks that visit a Medieval battlefield, a Saxon chapel and a vast selection of traditional English Inns.

Getting to Tewkesbury

By Rail/Bus – There are a number of public transport operating to and from Tewkesbury including trains (Ashchurch For Tewkesbury), national express and local buses.

By Car – Tewkesbury can be reached via the M5 Motorway, exit at junction 9.

By Air – There are a number of airports close to Tewkesbury including Bristol and Birmingham. From here there are options of buses and trains (Ashchurch For Tewkesbury) as well as hire cars and taxis.

Day 1 - Arrive in Tewkesbury

You will stay in Tewkesbury for the duration of your tour.

You have the option of the following 3 fabulous walks.

Walk 1 - The Severn Way circular

Follow the Severn Way across the Medieval battlefield that saw the end of the War of the Roses to the wonderful Saxon chapel at Deerhurst. Cross the river at Haw Bridge and walk through Chaceley and Forthampton on your return. This walk passes no fewer than five delightful riverside inns, so be sure to stop for a drink and take in the views.

Walk 2 - Bredon circular

Head north past the ancient Towbury Hill Fort to Twyning on the banks of the Avon. Here you can have lunch at the one of the many riverside inns before taking the little ferry across to the village of Bredon for a look around the majestic Tithe Barn.

Walk 3 - Tewkesbury circular

Head north by the Severn for a walk that takes you back to the best of traditional English country life. Stroll through parkland around a public school, watch cricket played on the village green and then enjoy fine views across Tewkesbury on the way back.

Day 5 - Departue

Recuperate before your journey home.

Do I have to walk/cycle every day of my trip?

Absolutely not! You can enjoy additional stop overs at various points along the tour if you would like more time to explore the local area.

We can also add additional days to the start and end of your trip to allow you to explore and relax.

How far can I walk or cycle each day?

How far you choose to travel each day depends on your individual fitness levels and how long you want to spend walking or cycling.

We have a wide range of tours to suit all fitness levels.

All our itineraries specify the daily mileage and the difficulty level of the tour.

What about places to eat?

All our tours come with bed and breakfast as standard.

In some more remote locations, accommodation providing breakfast may not be possible but we will find you somewhere to get breakfast nearby. This will be covered in the price of your trip.

Our tours do not include lunch and dinner as standard, though some accommodations do offer packed lunches and dinner options at an additional charge. Please let us know if you would like this option when booking.

How fit do I have to be?

Our tours all vary in degrees of hardness.

We specify the difficulty level of all of our tours on our website. The itineraries also give an indication of the gradients travelled on any given day.

What ages do you cater for?

Cycling equipment

We have a large range of bikes and accessories suited to adults and budding cyclists. We also offer a tag along (tandem) (please note it is not fully enclosed and waterproof but a single wheeled bike that attaches to the adult bike). We can also provide fully enclosed and waterproof trailers for younger children.

What day can I start my tour?

Most of our tours can be taken at any time but there are some which start on specific days which are usually Saturday to Saturday.
